The first consultation is typically up to an hour long. During this time, a case history will be taken and an examination made which will lead to a discussion about:
the working diagnosis of your presenting complaint
a treatment plan
These will be explained and treatment will usually begin at this first appointment.
Follow up appointments are half an hour, and will include a review of progress, any necessary modifications to your treatment and prognosis, and usually some exercises to do before your next treatment.
At all stages, you should feel informed by and confident in the osteopath. You will be required to sign a form before your first appointment giving your explicit consent to treatment. This is standard good practise, and your ongoing consent will be sought throughout the process.
Questions are encouraged at any time during your treatment - and you are welcome to call between appointments if there is something you are unsure about.

something you are comfotable being examined & treated in. Usually the whole spine is assessed therefore women will be most comfortable in a bra and pants or shorts, and men in boxer shorts or pants. Do talk to the osteopath about this if you want to.
The number of treatments required is dictated by the nature and severity of your presenting complaint, and is also effected by your level of health, stress and age. It is reasonable to expect signs of progress within the first four appointments, providing that you are following the advice given, and completing any exercises or stretches that have been recommended.
After treatment, some people may feel a little achey for up to a couple of days. This is quite normal and a sign that changes are being made. It is advisable to avoid strenuous activity for approximately 24 hours to maximise your body's chance to adapt.
At all stages of your treatment and consultation, you should feel comfortable and informed. Questions are encouraged. Care is centered on the patient, with treatment tailored to your requirements.
